Transmedia arts today face several challenges, where time-based media plays an important role in the devel - opment of new possibilities of expression. But these pos - sibilities only seem to be fully seized in an environment where artists can share and confront their experiences through real cultural exchanges. Hence, the project The Sounds of Lisbon represents an important step in this direction. The opportunity to share with each other our own territories and cultures, from Mainz to Lisbon, from Gutenberg to Pessoa, from the Rhine to the Tagus river. To achieve this, a project-based learning environment is an important step for a broader acquisition of skills and competencies in a globalized world. And this is where for the Multimedia Art Department of the Fine Arts Faculty from the Lisbon University this collaboration with the Mainz University of Applied Sciences is very important. The Lisbon University students working with Mainz Uni - versity students using exploratory research methodolo - gies, where students worked together in Lisbon and Mainz for a final exhibition, is the appropriate path to generate civic engagement in a transmedia connected world.

The Lisbon and Porto collaborations were an amazing challenge and a very fruitful experience among the last four years. The diversity of subjects and the different ways to handling with materials, situations, technology, concepts carried the teams to depurate the concepts to realize their projects.
Among the different topics and subjects some students were endeavoured to work on the subject sound representation on real acoustic environments. The idea was only focused on a simple concept: how to transpose beside the real feelings the real perceptions of a sound from his acoustical environment - the beach, the Casa de Fado, Ponte 25 de Abril - to an exhibition site.
The workflow to realize this simple concept is rather complicated and demands a lot of comprehensive understanding from psychoacoustics until real time audio signal processing. With the engagement of the students and a “team work”-based mood it was possible to record many materials in Lisbon. The next step was the treatment of this material - decoding/encoding on 3D formats - in Mainz. The last step was the software implementation, the design and the construction of a 3D Audio System. The construction of this system on the exhibition site had, as main objective, to displace scaled acoustical environments from Lisbon to Mainz preserving the sound identity of the city.
Experiencing the different sound environments on a 360º sound system pushed the perception of the public to another sense level and also students knowledge and skills to an advanced level.
